On December 15 at 9:30am typhoon Nona touched land...
...in the small town of Pinamalyan, on the island of Mindoros, Philippines.
Nine people lost their lives in the region
Hundreds of families were rendered homeless
Subsistence fishing and farming stopped
The Canadian team arrived three weeks later
Moving the families living in this ramshackle shed to a new shelter was a top priority
Three days later...
... the families moved in.
The occupants were jubilant
Hundreds of such shelters were built by local teams
Basic and tight...
... but the occupants quickly added more rooms.
Life had taken root again
Businesses re-opened
Kids played
Markets restocked
School "busses" resumed service
Built in wood, the kindergarten could not stand up to 300km/h winds
Unfinished homes were used to temporarily house the school
The team raised 61,000 pesos to have it rebuilt
But the durable solution to resist typhoons...
... requires concrete and steel.
... and lots of hard hats.
These homes can be purchased for $1,400 with an interest-free loan from Habitat
After two weeks on the ground, it was time for the team to leave.
The work is to be continued by a the next team from Japan.
